When did you first start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in April 2011. At the time, I was not doing well physically, my weight was at 242 lbs. I was having some anxiety that caused me breathing problems and I wasn’t sleeping well. I was also experiencing heart and chest pain due to my poor diet and lack of exercise. My cholesterol was high. My clothes were fitting tighter, in fact, I ripped my trousers down the back seam a couple of times at work. My wife complained about my snoring and I was starting to get a double chin. I realized that I’m over forty and I didn’t want to die from a heart attack. I started exercising with jumping jacks and jump rope in my garage. I knew that I needed something more challenging and exciting to make the drastic changes I needed physically, so I signed up for CrossFit.
100 Burpees for time and Max lifts.
Least Favorite WOD?
Any workout dealing with pull-ups as kipping is currently a challenge for me.
Do you do Paleo?
I do the CFF Paleo challenge once every three months to help me to stay on track.
Tell us about your sports & fitness background
…Played youth/high school football for 9 years (age 8 to 17) including 9 hell weeks, some hill/trail running in my early 30’s. Also, I did two years of Kenpo Karate.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?
I heard about CrossFit from my hair stylist at the time about 4 years ago. Both her and her boyfriend , a Windsor Sheriff, were doing CrossFit. She used to tell me about the tough workouts they did, which intrigued me to check it out.
Take us back to your first WOD
… what was it, and how did it feel? During my first intro workout, I think I did two rounds and felt like I was going to vomit. I was carrying a lot of weight but still thought I could do well and kept coming back for more.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before / after)?
I started out as 242 lbs. and got as low as 185 lbs. Now I have more energy, do not snore any more and the heart and chest pains are gone. Oh, and no more ripped pants! I’m stronger physically and mentally as a result of CrossFit and proper diet and nutrition.
There is never a dull workout in CrossFit. I like the fact that everyone that comes from different fitness backgrounds and everyone supports each other. I love the camaraderie at our box and the encouragement and support from Joe and Carol is never-ending and very much appreciated. CrossFit has been a game changer for me and my life!
Any advice for people just getting started?
I have never been into nutrition or diets until I started CrossFit, my advice to everyone is Paleo does work. I recommend doing the Paleo Challenges because you will see results.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit?
I love spending time with my wife, family and two cats. I enjoy watching all levels of football games- high school to NFL, especially love the Steelers! When on tropical vacations, I enjoy scuba diving.
